Daily Routine

Roald Dahl adhered to a strict daily routine. After waking up, Dahl would eat breakfast and open his mail in bed. At 10:30 am, he’d take a stroll through his garden to his writing hut where he’d remain working until 12:00 pm. Dahl headed back to the house for lunch around midday. Lunch usually included: a gin & tonic, Norwegian prawns with mayonnaise and lettuce. Dahl’s family finished their meal with a chocolate bar selected from a red plastic box.

After lunch he’d find some time to tend his animals. He’d then take a short snooze before taking a flask of tea back to the writing hut and completing another period of work between 4 pm to 6 pm. Once a month, Dahl would take all the waste yellow American paper and use it to fuel a bonfire outside his writing hut.
