Building Good, Breaking Bad

Why are habits important? Habits are what define us, they are made through daily routines, choices and decisions but so often we forget that they can also break us. Like everything in life, change can be intimidating, unnerving, or challenging but even the most successful people go through it to get to the top. Below are three steps you could take in the right direction towards achieving your goal or aspirations whatever they are.

Key points

  • Changing your mindset can lead to new results and help you to achieve goals

  • You must learn and adapt when confronted with new challenges or risk repeating the same mistakes

  • Understand your motivations for change and remind yourself of them to keep focused

Step 1: Mindset

Why settle when you can achieve? Success is a product of positivity, mindset, daily practice, and habits. A positive mindset is what drives ambition and motivation, highly successful people adapt a growth mindset opening themselves to new ways of thinking, feeling and seeing. Having a growth mindset allows you to focus on change, continually look for improvement, and learn new outcomes through failures. The most successful people in our world adapt this growth mindset, expecting positive outcomes in their everyday lives. Even in dire and tough situations like the current world situation, the key is to look at what is ahead of you and visualize where you are going. As Oprah says:

“Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough”

A way to start is to think positively and affirm every morning that your day will be succesful before doing anything else. Whether you start the day at 5 am or 11 am, make positive outcomes a priority. If you start to embed positive affirmation in your routine, it will become a habit which will motivate you subconsciously. Tell yourself you CAN and you WILL, tell yourself you CAN'T then you WON'T.

Step 2: Adapt and learn

Life is full of challenges but adapting to how you face them will allow you to succeed. The key to achieving this is learning through failures, using set-backs to make you tougher… even some of the highest successful people have gone through their challenges but they've used their failures as valuable learning experiences to better themselves. If you are doing something and not getting the outcome you want, adapt your approach. As Albert Einstein said:

"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results"

Step 3: Find YOUR motivations

What drives you? What makes you want to get out of bed and face the day?

Some people are motivated by financial reward, creating an impact, or even personal development. Understand what motivates you and use it to your advantage. Intrinsic motivation is a good way to keep yourself driven, find enjoyment in your routines. Challenge yourself, successful people don’t settle they strive to keep growing and continue to set difficult and exciting goals. Keep yourself interested and allow your excitement to fuel your progress.
